Entering Stephen’s World
As part of the StoryWorks team at C-Change, it is our mission to hear everyone’s story. From the people we work for, to the Personal Development Workers; we’ve been calling out to folk from across the organisation to get to know who they are and listen to their experience. For the past couple of months, it’s been an immense pleasure to visit people all the way out in Aviemore, to just around the corner in Bellshill, and everywhere in between. As a team, we love to get to know the people we work for, who they are, what their story is, and what they love. When we’re invited into someone’s home, it’s amazing how much more of an understanding you get about that person. Their personality, their being, what drives them. Taking that time to get to know every person we work for informs us of our duty to represent each of them in their truth.
Recently, we were invited to visit Steven. With a cup of tea in one hand and a chocolate biscuit in the other, we had a laugh, told stories, and heard more from Steven about what he loves. The big thing that struck was this: entering Steven’s home was really like entering his world. He loves war memorabilia, action figures, model planes, and of course, Lego. Seeing all these figurines placed in such a way showed Steven’s attention for detail for how he wants his home shaped. They were placed on the mantlepiece, the walls, the shelves, his bedroom, the hallway. There wasn’t one area of his home that didn’t reflect who he is or show us something new about Steven. Isn’t a wonderful, beautiful thing to be surrounded by what you love in your own home?
As we said, it is our duty at StoryWorks to represent the people we work for and their truth – but for us, it’s more of a privilege and an honour.
Below is a collage made entirely of the things Steven loves, all found in his home.
